It stands, because all the components want to collapse at the same time

3-part installation, Shiryaevo caves, Shiryaevo Biennale, 2013

The three-part installation was located in an abandoned limestone mine in Shiryaevo. An LED sign, referring to a quote from Heinrich von Kleist, forms the center of the work. It reads: “It stands, he replied, because all the components want to collapse at the same time. (scrolling down) It stands on the same time. (scrolling up).” After walking through a stone archway not held up by mortar but by gravity alone, the nineteenth-century Romantic German writer attempted to derive human morality from the laws of nature. Here, the updated version, on a loop (he replied/one replies), aims to stage a dialogue between the Enlightenment and our own »too big to fail« presence.
